What the Bible Says About Meekness

In Scripture, meekness is often misunderstood. It is not a weakness. It is not being passive, timid, or a doormat. Biblical meekness is strength under control, a posture of humility, gentleness, and trust in God rather than ourselves.

Jesus said in Matthew 5:5:

“Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.”

That doesn't sound weak; it sounds full of authority, trust, and promise.

Meekness is choosing:

  • Gentleness when you could respond in anger

  • Humility when you could assert control

  • Trust in God when you want to take over

My Struggle With Meekness

Recently, I found myself struggling in a few areas of my life. I'm thankful for a close friend I can be real with, someone to talk to about my spiritual walk and the challenges I face.

During one conversation, they told me,

“I think you need to learn more about being meek.”

I laughed.

Because in my mind, being meek as a woman meant being weak… subservient… a doormat—things God had already brought me out of. I had no desire to go back.

But studying this word taught me something powerful: meekness is not weakness,it'ss strength under control.

And if you're anything like me… that's hard.

What God Showed Me

As I dug deeper, I realized meekness also looks like:

  • Gentleness

  • Kindness

  • A soft tone

  • Patience

I had to be honest with myself… these aren't always my natural strengths.

So I cried out to God:

“What are You doing? I’m not these things. How could You still want to use me?”

And He showed me: He never asked me to be perfect already. He only invited me to let Him teach me.

The Journey of Growth

That's where I am right now, in a process of learning.

Maybe your journey looks different. Maybe God is working on something else in you.

Here's what I've learned:

  • I'm not supposed to have all the answers

  • I'm not supposed to be the smartest person in the room

  • I'm not supposed to fix everything

I'm simply supposed to faithfully give it to God every single day.

A Question for You

If something in your life feels off… something you know needs refining… ask yourself:

  • How is your quiet time?

  • Do you spend time with God daily?

  • Do you sit with Him—not just talk, but listen?

  • Do you give Him your struggles and actually wait for His response?

One of the hardest things I've had to learn is not just talking to God… but being still long enough to hear Him.

The Truth About Growth

Everything I've walked through, every challenge, everything I've had to lay down has been hard.

But holding onto God has brought me through every single time.

Am I fully "there" yet? No.
And honestly? I may never "arrive."

Because I never want to stop learning. I never want to stop growing. I never want to stop becoming better in Him.

You Are Not Alone

Wherever you are in your journey… You are not alone.

Every one of us is searching for something bigger than ourselves: personal healing, purpose, or peace.

God is in every step, and He can meet you right where you are.

A Word of Wisdom

If you're trying to grow in a specific area:

  • Find someone who has walked that path

  • Ask them: What helped? What didn't work?

  • Build a system that works for you, but keep it Christ-centered

That's what makes you the best version of yourself.

Final Encouragement

As you go out into the world… make it better:

  • One decision at a time

  • One truth at a time

  • One piece of God in you at a time

In a world that wants quick answers, be someone who reflects Christ. Let people see:

  • Your growth

  • Your journey

  • Your healing

  • Your testimony

Tell them where you've been, what you've overcome, and most importantly… what God has done for you.

Learning meekness isn't about being weak—it's about learning to trust God with your strength. It's about choosing gentleness, patience, and humility even when life feels hard or unfair.

Take a moment today to ask yourself: Where can I lean on Him more? Where can I let go of control and let God guide my heart?

Your journey won't be perfect. You will stumble. You will grow slowly. And that's okay. Every small step matters.

Remember, you're not walking this path alone. God is with you in every struggle, every choice, and every quiet moment. And as you let Him shape your heart, you will discover a strength that is gentle, steady, and unstoppable.
